Case study · Core Switching

A network core that stays up, for a hospital

Private hospital
Core replaced and migrated, 2024

Negros Occidental, Philippines

Overview

A private hospital in Negros Occidental engaged LMI to replace its network core and move the existing network onto it.

LMI installed two stacked core switches, separated the network by department and tested every segment before the hospital signed off in September 2024.

2core switches, stacked so one can take over from the other
21networks defined, separated by department and role
23acceptance checks, every one passed

The challenge

  • An existing hospital network to move onto a new core without starting over
  • Clinical, admin, CCTV and guest traffic to keep apart
  • Two firewalls to connect to the new core
  • A core that keeps running if one switch fails

The result

  • Two core switches installed, stacked and licensed
  • Routing between segments set up and tested segment by segment
  • Failover between the two switches tested
  • Workstations reach servers and CCTV as designed

On recordSigned acceptance test, overall result Passed.

How LMI solved it

  1. 1Plan

Mapped the network into segments by department and role.

  2. 2Build

Installed and stacked two core switches with failover.

  3. 3Migrate

Moved the existing network onto the new core and set routing, addressing and DNS.

  4. 4Test and hand over

Tested routing, DNS and firewall reachability per segment, then a signed acceptance test.

Site challenge

  1. 1The old network had to keep working during the move.
  2. 2Two firewalls had to connect to the new core.
  3. 3A hospital network carries clinical systems and CCTV.
  4. 4Every segment was tested, not a sample.

The new core: two stacked switches with patching to the access layer.

Verified at handover

  • Two core switches installed and stacked
  • Routing between all segments working
  • Addressing and DNS set for each segment
  • Workstations reach servers and CCTV
  • Workstation-to-workstation tests passed
  • Master and standby switch detection tested

On recordSigned by the hospital's representative, September 2024. Overall result: Passed, no deficiencies.
