Lightning protection for a power plant

Sugar mill and cogeneration plant
Two protected areas, six ground rods

Negros Occidental, Philippines

Overview

A sugar mill and cogeneration plant in Negros Occidental engaged LMI to protect two high points of the plant from lightning: an area on a conveyor structure and a boiler chimney.

LMI installed air terminals, strike counters and welded grounding in six days, and every ground rod tested well under one ohm.

6ground rods, each welded and tested
0.31–0.73ohms measured across the six rods
6 dayson site, from start to completion

The challenge

  • Protect tall plant structures: a conveyor area and a boiler chimney
  • Mount air terminals at height on a working plant
  • Run copper down conductors safely to the ground
  • Make grounding that measures low enough to carry a strike away

The result

  • Two air terminals and two strike counters installed
  • Six ground rods joined by exothermic welding
  • Every rod tested, from 0.31 to 0.73 ohm
  • Acceptance test marked Passed

How LMI solved it

  1. 1Survey

Identified the two high points to protect and planned the grounding.

  2. 2Install

Mounted the air terminals and strike counters, and ran copper conductors in conduit.

  3. 3Ground

Drove six ground rods in hand-holes and joined them by exothermic welding.

  4. 4Test and hand over

Measured each rod's earth resistance, then a signed acceptance test.

Site challenge

  1. 1Tall structures on a working plant.
  2. 2Work at height on the conveyor and chimney.
  3. 3Digging beside plant roads and equipment.
  4. 4Every rod measured, not a sample.

Mounting at height, a welded ground joint, and an earth-resistance reading of 0.39 ohm.

Verified at handover

  • Air terminals mounted at both areas
  • Strike event counters installed
  • Copper down conductors in conduit
  • Six ground rods with welded joints, in covered hand-holes
  • Earth resistance measured at every rod
  • Readings from 0.31 to 0.73 ohm

On recordAcceptance test signed by the plant's representative. Overall result: Passed.

What you get with LMI

Digital transformation requires solid infrastructure.

Every new system depends on the infrastructure beneath it. LMI builds that foundation so your team can find it, maintain it and trust it.

Strikes go to ground, not to your plant

Air terminals and low-resistance grounding give lightning a safe path down.

ProofSix rods, all under one ohm.

Proven by measurement

Every ground rod is tested, and the readings are recorded at handover.

ProofSix readings recorded, 0.31–0.73 ohm.

You can see every strike

Strike counters record each lightning event on the protected structures.

ProofTwo strike counters installed.

Confidence at handover

Your team signs the acceptance test before the system is relied on.

ProofSigned acceptance, March 2026.
